About Us

Kusirumi Travel, a full-service tour company specializing in personalized trips to Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and beyond offering insightful information that will create unforgettable journeys, was founded by native Peruvian, Jose Luis Ugarte de Souza in 2017. Over the years, Jose developed a network of Peruvian travel and expedition experts leading him on this journey. Jose specializes in conducting city, river, mountain, and jungle adventure trips across Peru.  From his home city of Cusco, Jose has been guiding guests on personalized tours, rafting trips, hikes, mountain treks and naturalist adventures throughout Peru and Chile for 27 years.

Jose devoted 10 years exclusively to rafting ­­­­­­­— including 33 adventures on Chile’s Bio Bio River, which until the construction of the Pangue Dam, was renowned as one of the world’s best white water rafting venues.  He then expanded to hiking across the mountain ranges of Peru, and naturalist tours of the Amazon rain forest.   Outside of Peru and Chile, he has led expeditions in Costa Rica and down the different rivers in Colorado and Alaska. 

Alas, life takes us down different paths and in mysterious directions!  After many years in Peru, Jose and his beloved wife of 13 years, Amy (a native New Yorker and consular agent for the US Embassy in Cusco), went to New York City for her to receive medical care.  

Now NYC-based, Kusirumi Travel organizes personalized flexible, one-of-a-kind travel expeditions and tours in the land of adventure – Peru.  Tours can be as simple as a one-day hike to a full itinerary including transportation, hotels, meals and more.

In addition to tour guide, Jose Ugarte, along with his beautiful wife, is a published author. In their book, La Pagina en la Puerta, explore the lessons, experiences, adventures, love and loss that transformed Jose into the guide that he is today and led to the development of Kusirumi Travel.
